live n hate crime

“Late n Live” is an Edinburgh Fringe institution. It is a big show, you never know who’ll turn up to do a set, whether they’ll be naked or if they’ll vomit green chartreuse over the front row¹ It starts about midnight and ends at, well, nobody knows that either because if there’s a fat lady singing everybody is too drunk to notice. There’s an alternative/rip off, “Hate n Live” where the audience gives the acts a topic to speak hatefully about for 5 minutes and votes up the most hateful act. It’s exactly as you would expect and, frankly, far better value and not at stupid o’clock than Late n Live.

I think I breach my governing body’s new transphobia position about a dozen times in the first three minutes. We’ll see if that’s a professional issue or a hate crime…11 days into the New Brave Scotia and we still don’t really know what a hate crime is and my governing body seem to not know what the law is.

I have packed a little bag with a toothbrush, a book, some phone numbers on a bit of paper and some knitting and placed it by the door. It’s much the same as I prepared when I was hoping to go into labour², only I’m expecting this process to be much more painful.
